Dialogue 2: Labor Day

Posted September 4, 2006

1. Why is Labor Day important to you?

Labor Day is one last break before our kids go back to school. A lot of people forget why we celebrate Labor Day. It was a union leader – Matthew McGuire in the 1800s – who helped create this holiday for the rest of us to celebrate.

2. Tell me a few things you and your family do on Labor Day.

Since it’s the last time we can all spend time together as a family before the kids go back to school, we go to Laughlin, NV, and relax alongside the Colorado River. We have a barbecue and enjoy each other’s company.

3. What do you say to those who view Labor Day as just another day off from work?

I remind them of the real history behind Labor Day, what it means and why we’re able to enjoy it. We need to continue to do this so we can enjoy Labor Day in the years to come.

4. What are some of the things union workers can do to help others understand the importance of Labor Day?

Next time you celebrate Labor Day, remember that it was a union leader who was behind it. People should never forget that. Also, while we can take time off and enjoy Labor Day, we also need to give thanks and do everything we can to educate others about the importance of the day.
