Dialogue 4: Health Care Scare

1. Is America’s health care system broken?
For the most part, yes. Under today’s system, big companies can dig into your pockets for more money for your health care. Management wants to put more money in their pockets, while cutting benefits for working Americans. They pay less, we pay more. This is just one of the reasons we need to encourage union membership.
2. What are some of the steps government can take to address these issues?
Encourage big corporate America to help working people. Companies should spend some money to ensure the average American workers are in good health. Hopefully government will find a system where every American can have quality health insurance. Unfortunately, the current system doesn’t provide for that.
3. Do you know people struggling to pay their health care premiums? How are they going about it?
Just before he died, my brother-in-law – who was a physician – operated a clinic to help the Hispanic community get better health care. Working class people would take their kids to this clinic. Many of these people now go to Tijuana to get medical help, especially for surgeries and prescriptions. They want to ensure their health so they can keep working and provide for their families.
4. Do you see the cost of health care going down anytime soon?
As it stands now, it’s going to continue to go up. The working and middle classes are going to have to pay more for their health insurance. I don’t see it coming down anytime soon.
