Dialogue 5: Tough Decisions

Posted September 19, 2006

1. Why, in your opinion, are Americans working harder for less money?

Even though people know they should be paid more for their work, they keep at it because they need to have a job to put food on the table. Many Americans have to work two jobs to make ends meet. People have less free time, which has led to a real sense of apathy in this country. Because of the minimum wage is so low, companies know they can offer a certain amount and get away with it.

2. Is the struggle becoming unmanageable?

It's certainly getting there for millions of American workers. Competition for good paying jobs is the fiercest it's ever been, and we're losing jobs in record numbers. Even on my daily route at UPS, I see and hear about good American jobs disappearing.

3. Tell me about some of the tough decisions you've had to make in recent years.

As a result of being part of the Teamsters for so many years, I've been able to get by without a problem. I work very hard but know that the union will always seek to improve our situation on the job. For those who are less fortunate, everything from paying the electric bill to buying school clothes for the kids can be a challenge.

4. What is your message to working Americans struggling to pay the bills?

Speak out and get involved in the political process. Exercise your civic duty to vote for those you believe will represent your point of view. Also, know that the unions are there to help you realize a better life.
