Dialogue 9: Pension Pains

1. As a union worker, do you feel that you will be prepared for retirement?
Yes, I do. I'm confident because of my involvement with the union and being part of a multi-employer plan. I feel fortunate being in the situation I'm in.
2. What steps are you taking to prepare?
Right now I'm primarily saving through my 401K. I'm also doing what I can to promote union membership knowing that our pensions will remain strong if more people participate.
3. Is saving for retirement top of mind for your friends and co-workers?
Yes - it's very important for everybody to try and save as much as they possibly can. It's also important for people to stay involved with the union. 9/11 taught us that we live in an uncertain world where things can happen unexpectedly. Single employer plans have taken a tremendous hit since then. Being in a union and knowing that it is safe and sound is a good feeling.
4. Where do you think saving for retirement ranks among key concerns facing American workers?
Unfortunately, I think it's at the bottom - at least when it comes to day-to-day saving. American workers, especially those who don't have benefits of a union, are having a tough time putting money aside for retirement. People need to put food on the table and pay the bills. Some of my friends who aren't in the union job don't make much money. They live pay check to pay check.
