Dialogue 2: Labor Day

1. Why is Labor Day important to you?
Before I had a union job, Labor Day was just another day off from work. Now I like to sit back and reflect on what the people who came before us did to advance our cause. Without them, we wouldn’t have things like proper working conditions, child labor laws, 40 hour work weeks, and time and a half after 40. Everything our ancestors did in the past we enjoy today because of their struggles. We need to look back, but also look to the future – we need to stay strong, just as they did.
2. Tell me a few things you and your family do on Labor Day.
My family and I usually enjoy each other’s company and go fishing for the day. Labor Day is one of the few days of the year that people should spend with their families.
3. What do you say to those who view Labor Day as just another day off from work?
I ask them if they know the history of Labor Day. I also remind them of the achievements made by hard working Americans over the years – especially the achievements of our forefathers. We need to sit back and appreciate what they did for us so we can keep this tradition alive and strong.
4. What are some of the things union workers can do to help others understand the importance of Labor Day?
I think we should all promote the importance of Labor Day everywhere we go. Even if we’re at a grocery store or department store, we should ask people how they’re going to spend Labor Day. We should ask them if they enjoy the benefits they receive and help them understand where they came from. Generations fought and struggled to get us the things we enjoy today – we need to continue this fight.
