The Michigan Department of Agriculture is a clearinghouse for information on food and consumer safety. The agency alerts consumers about recalled products and provides listings of Michigan food regulations. So in late December, representatives from Cure CVS visited the MDA's offices in Detroit and asked the agency to investigate CVS's recurring problem with selling expired goods. As testament to the problem, Cure CVS brought a basket full of expired goods recently bought at a CVS store.

A CVS spokesperson stated that it is company policy "to remove items before the expiration date," yet expired goods are still being found on store shelves. Food and medication consumed beyond their expiration date may pose a health risk, and CVS's continued sale of the items goes against company policy - not to mention health codes.

The Attorneys General of New York and California have already launched investigations into the matter of CVS's expired products: we call on Michigan to do the same.
