Over One Million Workers to be Contacted on the Job over Next Seven Days

WASHINGTON, DC -- Change to Win, a partnership of seven unions representing six million workers, today launched it largest worksite outreach program ever, National Talk Change at Work Week.

Change to Win Chair Anna Burger said, "It is crucial that workers talk to each other about this election, because their choice come November will be instrumental in whether their kids go to college, whether they have access to quality, affordable health care, whether they can retire with dignity. We know that contacting workers on the job is the most effective way to communicate where candidates stand on the issues, and that's why National Talk Change at Work Week is such a vitally important program."

Over the next seven days, Change to Win members will spend time talking with their co-workers about how John McCain and Barack Obama differ on the issues that are most important for working Americans in this election, such as health care, pension security, the housing crisis, and unemployment. During this week's blitz, over a million workers will receive information on John McCain's record of voting with George Bush 90% of the time, his stances on health care, trade, and the economy.

Burger said, "John McCain wants to continue the failed anti-working family policies of the Bush Administration, and America's workers simply can not afford four more years of their work being undervalued, their economic security being threatened, and their hope for achieving the American Dream slipping away. McCain's record on minimum wage, on health care, on job creation, and on the housing crisis clearly shows he is a candidate who supports Wall Street over Main Street, big business over working Americans, at every chance he gets."

During National Talk Change at Work Week, Change to Win members around the country will visit hotels, nursing homes, plant gates, grocery stores, hospitals, meat packing plants, warehouses, and many other worksites to deliver literature on the issues that are crucial to working Americans. The worksite blitz will focus on thirteen states: Colorado, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Nationwide, Change to Win unions plan to visit over 1300 worksites this week. In every state, workers will distribute informative literature on where candidates stand on the issues, and in many states they will distribute voter registration materials.

In addition to this week's activities, Change to Win will hold three more Talk Change at Work Weeks between now and November 4: From September 22 to September 26, from October 6 to October 10, and from October 27 to October 31. Each week will present a different thematic focus, all aimed at bringing workers the truth about the presidential candidates and how their policies would affect working America.

On February 21, 2008, Change to Win endorsed Senator Barack Obama for president of the United States of America. The Change to Win political program is conducting a comprehensive mail, phone, and canvass effort in 13 battleground states: Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, Indiana, North Carolina, and Virginia. Change to Win plans to send 10 million pieces of direct mail, make 20 million phone calls, and run a full-time, coordinated member-to-member canvass with 1,500 member organizers. Change to Win unions also plan to recruit over 50,000 volunteers for Election Day.
