WASHINGTON, DC -- Terence M. O’Sullivan, General President of
the 700,000-member Laborers’ International Union of North America, made the
following statement today on the 2006 mid-term elections:
Working family voters are sick and tired of being sick and tired. They have told
Congress and the Bush Administration it is time for a new direction.
Under this Congress, good jobs, health care, retirement security and respect for our country are disappearing. That’s why working family voters have made this Congress disappear.
This election is a first step toward raising wages for American workers, toward
affordable and accessible health care, for a policy of fair trade and for retirement security.
The Laborers’ Union is the largest and fastest-growing construction worker union in the United States. Its members build America, working in every state on all types of structures, including buildings, highways, bridges, power infrastructure and factories. Members also work in hazardous materials remediation and for public service agencies.
Thousands of Laborers volunteered in this year’s mid-term elections, phone-banking, canvassing and getting out the vote in 28 targeted states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Michigan, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Illinois.
