WASHINGTON, D.C. – Change to Win released a print ad today outlining how the Bush-appointed majority of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) stripped workers of their most basic rights and protections through a sweeping set of decisions issued in September. The ad is part of a wide-ranging public education campaign launched last month, featuring print ads, web ads and national demonstrations in over twenty cities throughout the country, from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles, California. The print ads are running in Minneapolis, Minn., Cincinnati, Ohio, and Washington, D.C.
The ad campaign centers on how under the Bush administration, the NLRB has become the most anti-worker labor board in decades. The decisions issued in September 2007 blatantly stack the deck against workers and in favor of corporations by making it harder to form a union, but easier to get rid of existing unions; allowing unrestrained corporate abuse of workers who exercise their rights; and eliminating any effective remedy for illegal employer conduct. A joint congressional hearing is expected next week.
“This is not just an assault on American workers, it’s an assault on the American Dream,” said Change to Win chair Anna Burger. “The tragic result of fewer and fewer workers being able to exercise their right to have a union is unprecedented income and wealth inequality, stagnant wages and more Americans without health insurance or retirement benefits. Americans are tired of the Bush Labor Board violating its statutory duty by serving the interests of greedy corporations at the expense of working families.”
Change to Win issued a declaration condemning the Bush Labor Board decisions last month, stating, “It is time to restore the fundamental principals of our basic labor law – to protect worker rights and to give workers a free and fair opportunity to improve their lives by bargaining collectively through their unions.” The declaration has been signed by thousands of workers, activists and labor leaders.
Change to Win union members and leaders also participated in rallies and marches in November protesting the blatantly biased board decisions outside National Labor Relations Board offices in over twenty cities across the country.
