DETROIT, MI – Calling her a staunch fighter for Michigan’s working families, Change to Win Michigan, which represents approximately 250,000 Michigan workers, today announced its endorsement of U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow in her bid for reelection.
"Under Debbie’s leadership, Michigan is heading in the right direction - one of fair trade, job creation and putting America first," said Jim Hoffa, Teamsters General President. "This is a clear-cut choice for the working men and women of this state - we must re-elect Senator Debbie Stabenow."
Bill Black, Director of Michigan Teamsters DRIVE, pointed to Stabenow’s co-sponsorship of the Employee Free Trade Act and her votes against CAFTA and for an increase in the minimum wage as evidence of her commitment to working men and women.
“We can not afford any more politicians who say they are for working families but then vote for bills that send jobs overseas and do nothing to raise wages for working people,” said Black.
Rick Blocker, Secretary Treasurer United Food and Commercial Workers Local 876 cited Stabenow’s record on key issues for middle class families such as lowering the cost of prescription drugs, and legislation that offered tax incentives to companies that create jobs in the U.S. rather than shipping them overseas as strong reasons that the six Michigan Change to Win unions are supporting Stabenow.
“Working people, particularly in Michigan, need all the help they can get these days,” said Blocker. “Debbie Stabenow focuses on the issues that matter to our families, including supporting our right to collective bargaining – and that is why it is important that labor stand behind Senator Stabenow.”
