WASHINGTON, DC -- Following is a statement from Anna Burger, chair of Change to Win, on the convening of the 110th Congress.

“Today, the 6 million workers united in Change to Win unions welcome their leadership in the 110th Congress, but with the expectation that newly elected members will do their part to restore the American Dream.

“Union volunteers devoted their time, energy, and hard-earned dollars in the last election cycle to send representatives to Washington who promised to fight for ordinary Americans, not corporate America. And across the country, voters joined them in taking action at the polls because they, too, want change in this country.

“Now it’s time for the new Congress to live up to their end of the bargain and put workers back at the center of an economic agenda that includes a paycheck that supports a family, affordable health care, a secure retirement, and most of all, a better life for our kids.

“Far too many families say that no matter how hard they work, they can’t get ahead; the American Dream has slipped away. Political speeches won’t put food on their tables or help pay the mortgage and medical bills. Common-sense solutions that work for all Americans in a modern, global economy will.”
