WASHINGTON, D.C. − The following is a statement from Change to Win Chair Anna Burger marking the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

“As our nation comes together today to observe the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the seven unions and six million members of Change to Win are working tirelessly to continue his fight for equality and restore the American Dream for all working families.

“Dr. King dreamed of a land free of discrimination. He dreamed of a land that recognized civil rights and workers’ rights. A land where all people had the opportunity to achieve the American Dream – a good job with a wage that can support a family, affordable health care, a secured and dignified retirement, and the chance for a better life for our children and grandchildren.

“In talking about the civil rights movement, he once said, ‘Our needs are identical with labor’s needs: Decent wages, fair working conditions, livable housing, old-age security, health and welfare measures, conditions in which families can grow, have education for their children, and respect in the community.’ To Dr. King, civil rights and workers’ rights were one in the same.

“While there are those today who are working to turn back the clock, Change to Win is following the footsteps of Dr. King. Just as he dedicated his life to creating a nation where all are treated with fairness and equality, the members of Change to Win remain dedicated to making sure all men, women and children have the opportunity for a better today, and a better tomorrow.”
