Letter from Anna Burger to South Korean President Roh Moo-Hyun
November 15, 2006
Dear President Roh Moo–Hyun:
On behalf of the six million North American workers of the Change to Win Federation, I am writing to express my profound concern and condemnation of the treatment of our sister trade unions, the Korean Government Employees Union (KGEU) and the Korean Federation of Construction Industry Trade Unions (KFCITU).
The government use of police to storm local offices throughout the country, to breakup sit-ins and rallies, in some cases causing injuries to union members as well as the arbitrary detention of members shows a clear contempt on the part of your government for international labor standards. These attacks are in violation of trade union rights and the right to freedom of association.
Change to Win is deeply concerned about the situation.
We therefore urge your government to take the necessary measures to guarantee full labor rights for employees in South Korea without further delay.
Yours sincerely,
Anna Burger
Chairperson
