Letter from Anna Burger to President Oscar Berger Perdomo of Guatemala

January 20, 2007

Mr. Oscar Berger Perdomo
President of the Republic
Ciudad de Guatemala, Guatemala

Dear Mr. President,

On behalf of the six million American workers of the Change to Win
Federation, I am writing to express my absolute condemnation of the murder
of Pedro Zamora Alvarez, General Secretary of the port union STEPQ, on the
evening of January 15, 2007.

As you may know, Pedro Zamora and his two children were attacked by
gunmen as they left the port area. Zamora was shot in the face, execution
style. His three year old son was injured in the hail of bullets.

Mr. President, it would seem that Pedro Zamora's violent assassination was
directly linked to his trade union activity and to his role in recent industrial
conflicts in the port of Quetzal. I am sure you would agree with me that antiunion violence is utterly unacceptable and that this murder must not go
unpunished.

I would ask you therefore to intervene to start an immediate investigation into
this horrific incident and ensure that those responsible be brought to justice.

I would be grateful to hear your comments on this case,

Yours sincerely,

Anna Burger
Chair, Change to Win
