Another Month, Another Dismal Employment Report

… to the tune of nearly 600,000 more jobs lost in January:

Nonfarm payroll employment fell sharply in January (-598,000) and the unemployment rate rose from 7.2 to 7.6 percent, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor reported today. Payroll employment has declined by 3.6 million since the start of the recession in December 2007; about one-half of this decline occurred in the past 3 months. In January, job losses were large and widespread across nearly all major industry sectors.

You read that right: 3.6 million jobs lost since December 2007.

Ugh.

We need a Union of Unemployed and Underemployed in America, and we need it now!

Initiated by organized labor and supported by progressives, civil rights and other organizations, it could rapidly draw support from $5 "memberships" open to the unemployed and employed, union and non-union, workers, parents, students, teachers -- millions of Americans mobilized to support the massive public investment programs needed to get America working at good-paying, productive jobs again.
