Krugman on the Crisis

From the “been meaning to post this for a couple of days now” department, Tom Ashbrook of NPR’s On Point had a great interview on Monday with Nobel laureate and all-around smart guy Dr. Paul Krugman about the financial crisis and what we should be doing to get out of it.

I encourage you to listen to the whole thing, but here’s an excerpt in which Dr. Krugman talks about the decline of workers’ wages in the United States and the ways that social policy — including measures like the Employee Free Choice Act to remove barriers that keep workers from joining together in unions — can turn that around:

I have the honor of reading many of Mr.Krugman's articles and most of his great book "The Conscience of a Liberal". "Yes we can" create the necessary power shift that will again both increase the size of and buttress middle income Americans, and help the poor with the passage of The Employee Free choice Act. EFCA will make employee choice to join a union a right not a risk.Companies will face real penalties-up to triple damages- as they should if they interfere with the inalienable right-under the first and thirteenth amendements of the U.S. constitutuion-of "concerted protected activity". Injunctions will be used when workers are dismissed from their work place for union organizing: a first contract will be determined by The Federal Mediation board obviating employer's from operating in bad faith(many have no intention of negotiating a contract, but simply stalling in order to squelch union activity) employers will not be able to impose a secret ballot election usually taking 60 days to consummate denoting "the interval of intimidation" since employees will be able to form or choose a union when a majority of employees of a working unit sign authorization cards.
