From left to right, CtW leaders Edgar Romney and Anna Burger join workers Keith McCorkle, Adam Riddell, Teresa Ransone, Denise Brown-Lipford, Samantha Miskevich, Samantha’s grandmother Patricia Toroyni, and Jennifer Pullom, all of whom volunteered their time and energy to elect Barack Obama.
This morning at the National Press Club, we rolled out the latest survey in our ongoing American Dream Project — a research project investigating how American workers define the American Dream, and how attainable they believe the Dream to be.
This latest survey focused on how workers’ perception of the Dream influenced their vote in the just-concluded election, with a special focus on the attitudes of young (under 30) workers.
Some of they key findings:
An astounding 84 percent of working Americans feel the economy is on the wrong track with only ten percent saying it is on the right track. Among younger workers the gap is even starker, with 87 percent who feel the economy in America is on the wrong track, and just seven percent feeling it is on the right track.
This intensity carried over into working Americans’ enthusiasm for voting in this election. Almost 7 in 10 working Americans (68%) felt more enthusiastic for voting in this election compared to elections past, fully 19 points higher from the fifth American Dream survey in September 2008. Only 12 percent felt less enthusiastic and just 18 percent felt the same. Among workers under 30, 71 percent felt more enthusiastic.
For working Americans, the single most important issue in deciding their vote for President was the economy and jobs (72%), followed by health care and prescription drugs (26%), and the war in Iraq (23%). Likewise, 81 percent said the state of the economy and jobs itself would influence their vote for President either a lot or a little (58% a lot, 23% a little), with only 18 percent saying it would make no difference. The state of the economy and jobs influenced younger workers even more, with 84 percent reporting it would influence their vote for President (59% a lot, 25% a little).
Barack Obama scored a decisive victory, winning working Americans 51 percent to John McCain’s 39 percent, with 10 percent either not sure or voting for a third party candidate. Obama’s victory was even more convincing among working Americans under 30, winning by 24 points, 58 percent to John McCain’s 34 percent, with nine percent either unsure or voting for a third party candidate.
American workers recognized the role Republican anti-government policies had in creating the current economic crisis, and now soundly reject these same policies, signaling the end of the Reagan era. Sixty-eight percent agree that we need to reform government to make it work for us, and that our government has to be part of the solution, while only 27 percent agree with the Republican frame of government is the problem and not the solution.

Several workers from CtW unions who worked hard in close-fought battleground states to put Barack Obama over the top also spoke, sharing their experiences from the campaign trail.
Teamster Keith McCorkle of Greensboro, North Carolina, spoke emotionally to the assembled reporters, telling them that “I’ve been waiting for decades for some of that money they have at the top to trickle down to me, but I haven’t gotten a drop. We want a different government, one that works for workers again.”
22-year-old UFCW member Samantha Miskevich of Limerick, Pennsylvania, pointed out how especially significant the election was for young voters, observing that “[t]his is our time. For me and my peers, this election was our 1960s moment, our moment to vote for change. I’ve never worked so hard or talked to so many people. This election was about saving the middle class.”

Keith McCorkle said that “I’ve been waiting for decades for some of that money they have at the top to trickle down to me, but I haven’t gotten a drop." So this guy must not have a job because he gets nothing from the people with more money above him. The money from the top he expects to trickle down is not a paycheck, which is the only thing he deserves from them, it is free handouts. Last that I knew the American Dream was not for the government to give handouts. The American Dream is the ability to work you butt off, yes I said work, and hard, these are two things I know are lost in many from my generation. That hard work can pay off and you may even become rich. With that hard work comes hard earned money that you earned yourself, no one can take that away from you… well that is how it was, but, you need to be patriotic, since you worked hard and made money you need to give it up so other people can have your money. So what does that say about the new American Dream? Hope some else becomes rich and successful so they can pay money to you for doing nothing. You will get paid for being stupid and or lazy. To me that does not sound one bit appealing. To those who are stupid and or lazy, well it sounds like a pretty good idea. I am 20 years old and I know the economy is doing badly, but there are two ways for it to go, get better or worse. Obama's plans, if he carries them out will steer us toward the latter. People don’t become rich because they give out money, and anybody from rich to poor is not going to willingly give up money. It is ridiculous to think by taking from the rich and giving it to the middleclass will help in any way. The rich will compensate by lower wages, layoffs, higher prices, etc. Now you tell me how is this going to help the middleclass? The only thing Obama is going to do for the middleclass is control them by making them dependent on the government. We have gone from trickledown economics to capillary poverty. The rich will lose money, they will pass that loss down to the middleclass, as well as others because the rich will not have as much money to donate to charities. Everyone will lose money. So who gains? Obama and the government gain control over you. People who eat this stuff up, believing that Obama is going to save our economy, are like cows being herded up to be slaughtered. You will do whatever Obama says because you are so out of touch and brainwashed from how the world really works, just like all the intelligence of a cow has been removed through breeding over time. The long time liberal bias in the media, liberals running the colleges and schools, the hate for Bush who is NOT a conservative, the falling apart of the republican party due to Bush, and a bad economy and promises of utopia are all the set up for the perfect storm, Barack Hussein Obama as president and a socialist economy.

Actually for your information Keith McCorkle is a hard working man. He is no man to sit at home, be lazy, or any of those other non sense things you were saying. I'm sure he was not meaning it in the way that you are trying to put it. He was not asking for a handout or a free check. That's what's wrong with America now. People taking words and twisting it around. You have just shown your ignorance and your stereotypical ways.

First and foremost, Keith McCorkle, MY FATHER is the HARDEST working man i know, He has never asked for a SINGLE hand out in my life. He has worked for UPS deliveriing packages every day for 27 years. Since I was little I can remember him leaving to go to work early in the morning and getting in so late he misses dinner with our family. I can remember him working even longer hours during christmas having to layer his clothes just so he will not freeze. Going out during the summer having to buy so much water just so he wont PASS OUT! i can remember having my basketball games and track meets with him not in attendance because he was out working. I am so proud of my father for being able to work with this historical campaign. This is something he has really enjoyed this past year and some change. My father has seen more hard ships than me or you Matt Faith. He has experienced first hand how the government has worked and how it has not. I do not appreciate you judging my father on grounds of the way you percieve his words. For you to make accusations that my father must not have a job, is a bogus excuse for trying to find flaws in people who have spent their whole lives fighting for change. For your information Teamsters Inc. is formed of WORKERS! so you should get your facts straight before you say my father must not have a job! Thank you however, Ms Nikki Washington for taking up for my father

First of all I would like to appoligize to Mr. McCorkle for making him sould like someone who is not hardworking. I was trying to make a point about how a lot of people feel, that they deserve free handouts from the government. What I said out of anger against him I am truely sorry. But what I am trying to say is still that Barack Obama is not going to help your father or any other hard working American, he says he will and I actually beleive that he wants to but his ideas are outright dangerous and crazy if he thinks they will work. I think Mr. McCorkle and I could agree we need a change from how things are now, but the point I am trying to make is that the change is not needed in the direction we are going now with Obama. Government and more control from the government is not going to help any middleclass American, it will only help those in the government, including your savior Mr. Obama. My father has also worked hard all his life, 30 years in a crappy factory that he hated, all so he could support his family. We are not the richest but money is not the only thing in life and I am very greatful for his hard work to support his family. but he does not want money to be taken from the rich and given to him, when you do that all the value of hardwork is taken away. My grandpa worked as a firefighter and to support his 6 children he worked as a carpenter on the side, he would be gone for days at a time and not see his family. He saved lifes, worked rediculous hours, owned a farm and taught me the value of hard work and what it means to earn what you get. My grandfather recently passed away and in his passing i see the value of hard work is being lost, people are looking for a free ride from Barack Obama. People like my grandfather and your father deserve more than to have their work lessened by others getting handouts for doing far less. My stand on what Obama is going to go to this country and why his plans wont work still stand, but I am sorry for implimenting you father to be one of the lazy people who dont want to work and want the government to support them, please forgive me and thank your father for being a hardworking American, the backbone of this country, but I would like to urge him to think about what Obama really wants to do and what will happen in result to his radical ideas.

As a proud SEIU member, I was also pleased to see so many new members of Congress - over 40 - campaign on overhauling our failed trade policy.

Unions have done nothing but negotiate themselves right out of a job.

The founding fathers of this country did not support and did not create a government system that brings about "redistributive change" obama quote. This country works because it is a capitolist system of government. I worked at a VA Govt. hospital and I can tell you the work ethics there are poor compared to a private owned hospital where you can get fired for not doing well. If you think you are worth more than you make then go out and elevate yourself by more education and more skills and bring yourself to a higher standard of living. I got out of the Marines with no money and got loans to pay my way through college and now own my own business. I worked 2 jobs while in school. The unions labor lock the corporations with so much restrictions and bs that they often go out of business or can't expand. Do you need more of and example of unions than the current situation with the housing collaps (fannie & freddie) and the big 3 auto companies. By union tactics forcing banks to give loans to folks who wouldn't normally qualify and couldn't pay starting with Carter and being more legislative through Clinton the whole thing finally blew up. According to Barney Frank "if it goes bad we will just tax more rich people" that is criminal. We as Americans simply cannot support this type of living without ending up like Russia. Wake up and realize what is going on with union type mentality less work more pay. If you think your worth more then further yourself and you will make more. Don't stay in a stagnet job and then complain.

Oh, and one more thing. I am not a Bush supporter. I use to be but he is not a true conservative. I blame him as well for bringing about socialism as well as the democrats. We need real leaders to lower all taxes and to encourage less business restrictions so business won't flee the US to expand their business like they did in CA. Look at how well business are doing in Nevada. It is because their tax system is simple and low. Business will grow their. We American's should put in jail... Bush, Paulson, Bernaki, Dodd, Barney Frank, Schumer, cox and obama for legislating in the courts to force banks to lower their lending standards.
