I am a very vehement advocate for the Employee Free Choice Act(EFCA). I appreciate the video of Anna Burger, a very cogent, articulate, and no doubt passionate leader pushing for workers rights. She was very impressive and inspiring. Her tone of determination seemed to imply that Change to Win and the SEIU will utilize whatever nonviolent means possible to pass the EFCA into law:but it certainly does not seem like it is going to be a cake-walk to get EFCA to the cloture vote in the senate. In the above video, Todd Beeton, expressed concerns that some of the democratic senators as well as president-elect Obama might "cave in" to some representatives of the corporate state(business interests). Since no republican senator voted for the EFCA in 2007,does it seem more likely now that any one of them will? I doubt it very much, and even if one or two republicans were to decide to vote for the EFCA, would it bring cloture for the bill in light of the aforementioned pressues from big business? Of course, this is a very tough call at this point. I feel that to get EFCA passed, it is certainly going to be an uphill battle. The timing of EFCA's introduction to congress is very important:the longer it is placed on the back burner, the less likely it will be passed. Obama may want to postpone EFCA just as he now appears to be postponing raising taxes on those with incomes over $250,000.00 until 2011.
A Call To Arms-The Million Worker March to Washington.
Passionately expressing our sentiments more directly or through signature on a petition for the EFCA to our elected officials(especially our senators-it is very likely to pass in the house again)certainly may be one of the most effective means to persuade senators to vote for the EFCA, but a million worker march on Washington could have an overwelming impact on the passing of the EFCA. The media coverage of this march would leave an indelible impression on not only millions of workers across party lines(a Peter Hart poll has shown that a super majority of non-managerial employees would join a union if they felt it was a right rather than a risk) but on the american public and our american senators.Would a republican senator be able to state with any degree of credibility, on the nationwide networks that non-managerial employees do not want to be union members while there's a million workers march? Could not one sixth of the Change to Wins Union members(approx. one million) find a way to trade with their employers a few days leave of absence for some of their vacation time in order to march in Washington to push the EFCA through the senate? I think that trading vacation days for a march on Washinton is a minuscule sacrifice compared to the suffering and sacrifices workers have sustained in the union insurrections of the american past. I believe that a "call to arms" for a march on Washington D.C.should be organized immediately and consummated regardless of whether or not it seems likely that EFCA will be passed sometime in the future. A million worker march will maximize the liklihood that the Employee Free Choice Act will be passed.
