DNC 2008: Welcome to INVESCO

People filtering in to INVESCO Field

It’s 3:40PM here in Denver and I am coming to you from the press box at INVESCO Field, where in a few hours the American Dream Candidate, Senator Barack Obama, will accept the nomination of the Democratic Party for the office of President of the United States.

In my post about credentials, I talked about the various ways the DNC controls access to the convention. That has been true for the first three nights of this convention, but tonight will be a bit diffferent. One of the principles of the Obama campaign has been that government and politics should be open and transparent. To create a convention that embodies this principle, for this climactic night, the party has distributed tens of thousands of free “community credentials” that will throw open the doors of this event to a larger audience than any convention night in decades. That’s why the proceedings have moved from the Pepsi Center to INVESCO Field — because the response to the community credentials offer was so strong that only a football field can accommodate it!

You can see in my photo above how the stadium looks as people just start to filter in. When all those tens of thousands are here, I’ll post another picture so you can see the difference.

UPDATE (6:25PM): The scene two hours later:

INVESCO at 6:30PM

… and there’s still a line of people waiting to get in stretching as far as the eye can see!

UPDATE (8PM): How it looks at eight o’clock:

And that’s just the part of the stadium that’s directly in front of me. If I had a wide-angle lens I could really blow your mind. This place is packed.

UPDATE (Aug. 29): Well, i didn’t have a wide-angle lens, but the New York Times did. Follow that link and prepare to have your mind blown.
