DNC 2008: Musicians, Activists Rally for Health Care for All

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to attend a pretty cool event — a rally organized by SEIU that brought together musicians and activists in support of health care for all, one of the most important causes of our time.

The platform had one of the most eclectic collections of people on it I’ve ever seen — legendary rappers Chuck D and Professor Griff, alt-rock favorites Chris Walla and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, local favorites DeVotchKa, SEIU International President Andy Stern, National Education Association President Reg Weaver, Texas progressive legend Jim Hightower, and lots more.

It isn’t often you get to hear such a wide spectrum of people testifying to the need for health care for all, so I thought this was one event I shouldn’t miss. And I’m glad I didn’t — the music was great, and the cause is one that affects every working person in this nation. (Chuck D even pointed out that it especially effects musicians, since the vast majority of professional musicians don’t have contracts that offer benefits like health care.)

The performances were all solid, but the set by DeVotchKa — who I’d never even heard of before — was a revelation. These guys are insanely talented. To prove it, I took a video of them performing one of their songs; here it is for your listening pleasure:

See what I mean? These guys aren’t gonna be a local secret for very much longer…
