Teamsters and Turtles

I told you a few days ago about Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa’s landmark announcement that the Teamsters were rejecting the “drill our way out” approach to the oil crisis and embracing sustainable, green solutions. Well, now I’ve got video of Hoffa’s remarks, and I wanted to share them with you… so, without further ado:

The media noticed Hoffa’s announcement, too. In today’s Washington Post, Harold Meyerson writes:

The Teamsters and turtles are together today as they have not been since the 1999 anti-WTO demonstrations in Seattle.

And on the San Francisco Chronicle’s environmental blog “The Thin Green Line”, Cameron Scott writes:

These aren’t statements you would expect to hear from a blue-collar worker (or a guy who represents them, anyway). Hoffa made them at a conference addressing ways to reduce pollution from trucks waiting at major ports such as Los Angeles, Oakland and Long Beach. The Teamsters have realized that polluting trucks hurt drivers as much as those who live near the ports. Port pollution causes 2,400 premature deaths every year in California alone.
