Would You Buy a Used Car From This Man?

McCain

I told you this back in April, but now noted socialist rag BusinessWeek has noticed that McCain's tax plans would make the rich richer while Obama's would help the middle class:

  • Senator McCain's tax cuts would primarily benefit those with very high incomes, almost all of whom would receive large tax cuts that would, on average, raise their aftertax incomes by more than twice the average for all households. Many fewer households at the bottom of the income distribution would get tax cuts, and those whose taxes fall would, on average, see their aftertax income rise much less.
  • In marked contrast, Senator Obama offers much larger tax breaks to low- and middle-income taxpayers and would increase taxes on high-income taxpayers. The largest tax cuts, as a share of income, would go to those at the bottom of the distribution, while taxpayers with the highest income would see their taxes rise.

So if you were wondering which candidate would help you and your family get closer to achieving the American Dream, look at this picture and ask yourself if it reminds you of yourself:

Scrooge McDuck swimming in money

If your answer is "no", and you vote for McCain anyway -- well, don't say I didn't warn you.

Having worked for various incarnations of Scrooge McDuck over the years, I know first hand how easily a CEO can sacrifice someone else's livelihood for the corporate good.

My CEO,in concert with other CEO's in a similar industry, forced a strike/lockout situation that affected some 70,000 workers a few years back. That group was willing to put all those people on the streets to keep from paying decent wages and providing good benefits to all those loyal workers because they felt like it. Because they wanted more money at the top, and to appease the shareholders, they decided to pull the rug out from under those workers and their families.

One of the reasons that Change to Win exists, is that at the time, we were blindsided by the blatant, cold-hearted greed of these employers. The fact that they were willing to risk customers' loyalty, denigrated us workers through a campaign alleging we didn't deserve what we had---we were undereducated "banana scanners"---said volumes about how they came to see our contribution to their wealth.Anyone, trained or not, could do just as well, for less money and no benefits. It proved to be untrue, but they stuck to it to hurt us.

The eventual lack of public outrage spoke to the general population, who had become used to the corporate abuse and grew weary of having their lives disrupted. People crossed the picket lines saying,"I pay for my benefits, why shouldn't you?" Or, "I went to college for four years and I don't get benefits. Be glad you have a job!" For the most part, that didn't deter us from holding the line, because we truly believed that justice would prevail. Some of us lost everything waiting for justice; it was a bittersweet end.

Point is, we took one for the team. There was no clear winner in that war, although our most recent negotiations resulted in a better contract. And we learned that a hurt to one is a hurt to all---we need to have one another's backs with great immediacy if we are to accomplish anything in the future. No matter what your union or your affiliation is, you have to honor that picket line, that boycott, that action. You have to get out and help somehow, because the job you save may be your own.
