CtW Chair Anna Burger's statement for Labor Day 2007:
Over the past year, Change to Win has asked workers in surveys and focus groups to assess the American Dream for themselves and their families. Does the American Dream have any meaning in the 21st century global economy? What is the American Dream for today's workers? Will the American Dream be there for the next generation of workers? ...
For America's workers, the fulfillment of the dream is work that is respected, wages that can support a family, affordable health care, a secure retirement and the opportunity for a better life for their children.
We also found that workers today believe the American Dream is at risk. For the first time, working families - regardless of income or education level - believed that the next generation will NOT be better off. They believe the economy is headed in the wrong direction, and, no matter what you might hear in the media or from government, that working families are falling behind...
Change to Win unions are determined in our efforts to restore the American Dream for today's workers - just as our unions did for generations before.

I understand what you say you do to promote the American worker, but it is simply not adequate. Worker pay continues to diminish, good jobs continue to be exported, illegal workers continue to drive wages down, the minimum wage is woefully insufficient, pension funds continue to be stolen, healtcare continues to be evasive, union membership continues to decline and US corporations are given free rein to exploit the world.
It is a fantasic time to rally to the American worker, but no union seems up to the task. Union investments in political contributions and trips to foreign countries are a waste of time and money. The battle for the health and welfare of the American worker will be won on the streets of America helping Americans better their economic lives. Until someone in the union movement genuinely believes in the American worker, the economic welfare of all Americans will continue to suffer. All the union efforts of the past 40 years has resulted in a huge loss of union jobs, fewer benefits, lower wages and a decline in the standard of living. There is little reason for the American worker to celebrate Labor Day, 2007.
Having said all this, I firmly believe that unions are the only hope for Americas economic future. If and when someone at any union is sincere in generating meaningful change, I would be happy to share ideas that will assist in creating a better life for Americans. Unions can change America if they can find the heart and will to really Change To Win!
