How Sweet It Isn't

The Hershey Company, the makers of the quintessentially American chocolate bar, have announced that they are cutting 11.5% of their workforce and moving jobs to a new plant in Monterey, Mexico. The cuts will land especially hard in Oakdale, California, where 575 workers will be laid off, and in Hershey, Pennsylvania ("The Sweetest Place On Earth"), where 900 will lose their jobs.

The move comes one month after the company created a "Vice President for Corporate Social Responsibility" position, filling it with former Corporate Communications Vice President John C. Long. In announcing the new slot and the choice of Long, Hershey Company Chairman Richard Lenny said:

Hershey has a rich heritage of doing business responsibly and improving the quality of life in communities locally and internationally. John has played a leading role in these efforts, and his experience at Hershey and with industry groups makes him the ideal choice for this new position.

Yes, nothing improves "the quality of life in a community" quite like throwing hundreds of people out of work to replace them with cheaper labor across the border. Great job, John!
