People Are Talking About Paula Deen and Smithfield

More buzz about the Justice at Smithfield campaign's plans to meet up with TV personality Paula Deen tonight...

From the Washington Post's Reliable Source column, "Pork and Deen: A Problem Pairing?":

Will Paula Deen be the next Kathie Lee Gifford? When the Food Network's Southern belle comes to the Smithsonian tonight, union organizers at the world's largest pork plant will be there to protest.

In September, Deen signed an endorsement deal with Smithfield Foods, which makes her a high-profile target for workers at the company's Tar Heel, N.C., facility. Former senator John Edwards and actor Danny Glover have already called for increased safety measures at the plant, but Deen hasn't given her support to the decade-long effort. So two workers, Fran Rogers and Lenore Bailey, have tickets for tonight's sold-out book reading at the Museum of National History and will ask her to meet with plant workers.

From the Daily Press of Hampton Roads, Virginia, "Union talks spill onto Deen's apron":

The union that has been bare-knuckle battling Smithfield Foods plans to show up at a Paula Deen book-signing to pressure her to end her partnership with the company.

And from the Kansas City Star's Workplace blog, "Paula Deen in Labor's Frying Pan":

Fame, and its related career decisions, has a price. And that price is public awareness of deals that you make. Deen's deal to be a promotional partner for Smithfield Foods' pork products has put her on the hot seat.
