Carpenters Using Text-Messaging to Connect with Young Workers

The Pacific Northwest Regional Council of Carpenters has begun utilizing new methods and 21st century technology to connect with the next generation of workers. The council is using e-mailing and text-messaging to gather input and communicate with members. It has also recruited 550 campaign captains to contact peers at job sites.

Polls say that nearly 7 in 10 workers believe joining together in unions would make things better; that number is even higher among those under 30.

But in order to convert polling data into more workers uniting on the job, the union must find innovative ways to connect with today’s workers. It looks like the Carpenters are on the cutting edge.
