It's a new year, and a good one for executive actions that will lift up low income workers under federal contracts in the U.S and overseas. President Obama must take these government contract issues into his own hands and lead the country by example. He can guarantee low wage federal contract workers and their families are taken care of by paying a living wage.

Why do we need a living wage in America? Businesses won't create jobs unless there is purchasing power to fuel the job growth. Right now, people are barely getting by working poverty wage jobs. As a country, there are many important things we can do to change income inequality, but raising the minimum wage for low-wage workers and allowing them to organize is key to putting the power back into people's hands.

As Americans, we used to pride ourselves in economic and social mobility, but now opportunity is reserved for the very rich and their children. The middle class is sinking to a point where we won't see a middle class in the future. It's important for our country to pay better wages and we need a country where there is equal opportunity for everyone.
