Geralyn Lutty

Geralyn Lutty is a leading member of a new generation of U.S. labor leaders who are changing the face of the American Labor Movement. With more than 20 years experience in organizing and negotiating collective bargaining agreements on behalf of a swiftly changing workforce, Lutty has vast expertise on a number of important issues ranging from the effect of stagnant wages on working family living standards to the impact of skyrocketing health care costs.

She has served as an organizer, executive director of a local union, and assistant to a regional director. In 2002, Lutty was elected an International Vice President of the 1.4 million member United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, and appointed Director of UFCW Region 7 Northwest. Before that she served as Collective Bargaining representative in UFCW Region 1 Northeast and the Executive Assistant to the Director of UFCW Organizing, among other positions.

In the early 90s, Lutty was the lead organizer in a successful effort to help 1,200 nurses at a Seattle hospital in a groundbreaking effort to form and chart their own local union.

As Director of Region 7, Lutty coordinates activities among 15 local unions serving approximately 90,000 UFCW members in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. She provides assistance and support to the locals in their collective bargaining, organizing, and political and legislative efforts. One of her first achievements on becoming the regional director was to establish a UFCW Council comprising the local unions in Washington State, providing a hub for UFCW local leaders to more systematically implement efforts that improve living standards for working families.

Lutty holds BA and MA degrees from Catholic University in Washington, DC, and an MSW from Hunter College, New York, N.Y.
