Secretary-Treasurer, Change to Win
Edgar Romney is the Executive Vice President of UNITE HERE - a merger of the Union of Needletrades, Industrial & Textile Employee, AFL-CIO (UNITE) and Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees (HERE) International Union. The recent merger brought together two vibrant unions representing workers in the areas of women's, men's and children's apparel production and distribution, auto supplies, hotels and restaurant employees and other industries in the United States and Canada.
Romney was recently elected secretary-treasurer of Change to Win (CTW). Change to Win, which was formed on June 15, 2005, is a new alliance devoted to creating a large-scale, coordinated campaign to expand the American labor movement.
Romney also serves as Manager of the New York Metropolitan Area Joint Board UNITE, representing thousands of members working in the garment industry in the New York region.
Romney joined the former ILGWU in 1962 as a shipping clerk in Local 99. He was an active Shop Steward, and in 1966 joined the staff of Local 99 as an Organizer and Business Agent. In 1976, he was asked to serve as Director of Organization for Local 23-25. Two years later, he was elected Assistant Manager of Local 23-25 while continuing his duties as the local's Director of Organization. He became Manager-Secretary of Local 23-25 and a Vice President of the ILGWU in 1983. Romney served as Manager-Secretary of Local 23-25 - the largest affiliate of the ILGWU and UNITE - until 2004 when he became Manager of the New York Metropolitan Area Joint Board. He was elected Third Vice President of the New York City Central Labor Council in 1986, and was elected 2nd Vice President in 1991. In 1989, Romney was elected ILGWU Executive Vice President, becoming the first African-American to hold that position, and in 1995, he became Executive Vice President of UNITE. Romney has represented the former ILGWU and UNITE internationally on numerous occasions.
Edgar Romney serves on the Boards of Directors of the New York Industrial Retention Network, the US/Labor Education in the Americas Project (US/LEAP), the Partnership for America's Families, the Garment Industry Development Corporation, the Fashion Crafts Education Commission Advisory Board, the New York State Department of Labor's Garment Industry Advisory Committee, the American ORT Federation, the Bayard Rustin Fund, and the New York Urban League. He also serves on the Executive Boards of the American Labor ORT Federation, the National Jewish Labor Committee, and the National Trade Union Council for Human Rights.
Romney is Co-Chair of the Garment Industry Day Care Center of Chinatown; and has been a board member of the American Committee on Africa since 1993. He is Vice President of the Consumer Assembly and National Secretary of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, and the New York State AFL-CIO, and is on the Advisory Committee to the New York State Labor-Religion Coalition. Romney is also an active member of the Congressional Black Caucus Braintrust Workshop on Labor Issues.
Over the years, Romney has received many awards in recognition of his work. Among them are the Nelson Mandela Achievement Award from the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, the Spirit of Life Award from the Robal Chapter of the City of Hope, and the Man of the Year Award from the New York City Chapter of the NAACP. He is a recipient of the 1993 Ellis Island Medal of Honor as a result of his exceptional humanitarian efforts. In 1995, he received the Community Service Award from the Chinese American Planning Council. He has also been honored by the New York City Central Labor Council, the New York City Chinatown YMCA, and the Metro New York Chapter of the A. Philip Randolph Institute.
